Old stars die in many unlike ways , but they all have one thing in common : They cause havoc for their nearby planet . But it turn out that if two star topology are present , the planet in the system are more likely to survive .

An international squad of investigator from NASA ’s Goddard Space Flight Center and York University discovered that planets revolve two - star systems are seemingly advertize outwards to safety when one of the whiz turns into a cherry-red giant .

“ This is very different from what will befall in our own Solar System a few billion age from now , when our Sun start to acquire and amplify to such a wondrous size that it will engulf the inside planets , like Mercury and Venus and possibly Earth too , faster than they can migrate out to big orbits , ” said lead author Veselin Kostov from NASA in astatement .   “ It seems that if we had a second adept in the center of our Solar System , thing might go differently . ”

In a report , publish in theAstrophysical Journal , the scientist simulated nine different scenarios of circumbinary satellite   –   those   that revolve two stars ( often called Tatooine planet after the famous world in Star Wars ) . They were surprised to name that these planets are more probable to migrate outwards , in some cases double as far as Pluto from the Sun , when one of the star turn into a carmine hulk .

Things can get even more complex when there are many planet in the organization . Under those conditions , some planet will be eject , some will switch place , and some could even   be eat by their parent star .

“ The reconfiguration can be quite dramatic when there are several planet , ” said co - author Kevin Moore of   York University in the statement .   “ Although all of the known circumbinary planets are gas giants , it is possible that somewhere out there is a terrene circumbinary major planet that migrates to an domain that now makes the planet potentially habitable for a short while . ”

Binary star are very common in the universe , so understanding their evolution is very important . After one becomes a cherry giant , the swell up envelope of gas can cover both mavin , leading to either a dramatic mass exit for the system or a gigantic supernova explosion .
