Nick Jonas, 26,toldBillboardfor the cover storyof their specialBillboard Music Awardsissue (which PEOPLE can exclusively reveal he shares with brothers Joe, 29, and Kevin, 31) that their new music had to get the seal of approval from two out of the three “J Sisters” — Nick’s wifePriyanka Chopra,36, and Joe’s fiancéSophie Turner, 23. The third “J Sister” is Kevin’s wife, Danielle, 32.

“Priyanka and Sophie love pop music and listen to Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits or Apple Music all the time,” Nick told the publication. “So they were a really good gauge, like, ‘Does this sound good?’”

Nick described yet-to-be released song “Hesitate,” as Joe’s “love letter” to Turner, and “I Believe,” as a testament to his own whirlwind romance with Chopra through the lyrics: “People saying that we move on too fast/But I been waiting for a reason, ain’t no turning back.”

“It feels like the second bite of the apple is potentially going to be even bigger because we’re in a healthy place, we’re enjoying the ride,” Nick said. “And I think the music is a reflection of that.”

On May 1, the band will also play their first awards show in more than a decade when they take the stage to perform“Sucker”at the BBMAs in Las Vegas.

The brothers first split in 2013 after nearly eight years together as a band, and Joe told the magazine that at the time they all “wanted to create something on our own and were just trying to force it into what was going on.”

“We were going through the motions, without the heart of it,” he continued. “The way we communicated to each other wasn’t healthy anymore.”

Throughout the years, Nick would often bring some of the Jonas Brothers songs into his solo sets but said he always thought, “This would be a lot better with the other Jonas Brothers.”

“There’s a different magic when we’re together that I wasn’t experiencing [solo],” he added.

Joe explained that the moment they officially decided to reunite came while on a trip to Cuba to film their documentary (which will air on Amazon later this year) in July 2018.

Of playing their 2008 hit “Lovebug” in an apartment complex on the trip, Joe said, “I was so happy. I looked at the guys and was like, ‘I’m ready. Let’s do this, for real.'”

While creating new music with the Jonas Brothers, album producer Ryan Tedder said they have something in common with fellow chart-topping heavyweightsSam SmithandAdele.

“Sam Smith and Adele are maybe the only other acts I’ve ever worked with where they’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh. It’s 6 p.m. Let’s call it a day,'” Tedder said.
