Liam HemsworthandMiley Cyrus‘ 10-year romance may have never happened.
Duringan interviewwithToday, which airs on Sunday, Hemsworth, 29, revealed he almost didn’t get the part as Will Blakelee inThe Last Song— the role that introduced him to his now wife, 26.
“That was the first job I got [in the U.S.], and it was literally right at the end of my three-month visa,” Hemsworth, who is from Australia, explained. “They cast another kid, and it didn’t work out with him.”
That’s when he got the phone call that changed his life.
“My agent calls me like, whispering, like ‘You’ve got to go to Disney right now. It’s not working out with the other guy. You’ve got to go in and read with Miley again,’ ” Hemsworth recalled.
“I come in and everyone starts clapping like, ‘We should have gone with you first!’ ” Hemsworth said.
The Last Song, follows Ronnie Miller (Cyrus) who is sent to a Southern beach town to live with her father for the summer. There, she meets Blakelee and the two fall in love after discovering their mutual love of music.
“It’s sort of weird how it all comes together, and then 10 years later I’m here, married,” Hemsworth said.
The coupletied the knotjust before Christmas on Dec. 23.
In the photos, Cyrus can be seen embracing Hemsworth while wearing an off-the-shoulder white gown as Hemsworth sported a tux.
Cyrus captioned the photos: “12.23.18” and “10 years later …..” On the photo of them kissing, the singer wrote: “This is probably our one – millionth kiss.”

Hemsworth also shared thesame photo, writing, “My love.”
“They always wanted a small, private celebration with family and close friends and that’s what they got. Miley seems ecstatic,” a source previouslytoldPEOPLE of the couple’s big day.
“She loves her Tennessee home and was very happy about having the ceremony there,” the source shared.
Cyrus and Hemsworth’s private wedding comes after a rocky,on-again,off-again relationshipbetween theLast Songcostars. The pair dated for years before heproposed in 2012, but the two ended their engagement andbroke up a year later.
