Google I / O is around the box , and while the caller has alreadyteased us with some revamped service , we ’re expecting to see a great deal more . Personally , I ’m hoping to see improvements to Google Lens , the figure recognition tool the ship’s company has put into a few of its apps . Because flop now , my friend , it ai n’t cracking .
Case in point : it ca n’t even recognize Google ’s own devices . Redditor Prudhvi4ppointed out an interesting inadvertence in the object designation feature bake into Google Assistant . When they took photos of their gray Google Home Mini , Google incorrectly place it as either a ball or a tennis racket . calculate at the image , it ’s understandable how Google could ’ve dropped the ball on this one . The gimmick ’s proximity to a power strip , the uneven inflammation , and the extra objects around the Mini do n’t help .
So I decided to try it out myself , using the Lens feature in the Google Photos app for Io on the Google Home devices I have at home . I also screen it on a newly imbed succulent on my desk , which it correctly identified as a chalk dudleya .

Lens , from various angle , failed to identify any of the three Google Home equipment I have . The account ? “ Hmm , not seeing this clear yet , ” with a link to what Google Lens can and ca n’t identify . While Google does n’t claim Lens can identify consumer trade good ( onlylisting a few itemslike business cards , paintings , landmark , plants , and animals ) , being ineffectual to key its own products from a bevy of angles highlights the restriction of this feature in its current nation .
It also highlight how nascent and bare many of Google ’s consumer - face products experience , Google Home and Google Lens being reasonably double-dyed examples . Lens could n’t key the dracaena plant I have , one of the few things it say it would be able to , nor could it place a middling traditional - looking thermometer I had in my draftsman . With Google ’s domicile devices , it ’s often a crap game whether or not I ’ll be able to send euphony or podcasts to them without re-start my app , the gimmick , or my router at least once a week .
I interpret Lens is make on top of Google ’s computer visual sense enquiry , which use tremendous database of images to train computers to key objects , so there might not be many Google Home photos to crop with , but this example just remind me of how ill I am of being a beta examiner .
Sure , it ’s a developer ’s conference , so Google is almost certainly function to focalize on the advancement it has made in computer visual sense and machine learning and talk about how it ’s make it easier for developers to hold its Material Design esthetic to their apps . Personally , I ’d prefer they fix what ’s already out there , or at least drop by the wayside releasing half - baked products .
