Wreck - It Ralph wasa revelation : a fairytale for the videogame age about the true meaning of villainyand heroism . Now Ralph ’s cowriter , Jennifer Lee , has write and co - directed anew picture show , Frozen , in which one of the all - metre neat fairytale villains gets awhole unexampled outlook .
underage spoilers ahead …
Frozen is looselybased onafable by Hans Christian Andersen , TheSnow Queen , in which the eponymic Snow Queen is kind of a foul bit ofwork . But in Frozen , the Snow Queenis in a similar billet to crash - It Ralph — she ’s a misunderstood figure , whom almost everybody check as a villain .

Without giving too much away , Frozen is about two Princesses : Elsa ( Idina Menzel ) and her sister Anna(Kristen Bell ) . Elsa has ice baron , more or less blood-related to Iceman from the X - Men . Butshe ca n’t really control them , so her parents further her to suppress them , and keep her locked away . But that backfires ( back - frosting ? ) when Elsa grow upand becomes queer herself , and winds up souse the dry land into an eternalwinter when she loses control .
The thing that ’s great about Frozen is that it refuses ever to call on the question of Elsa ’s out - of - controlpowers into a elementary metaphor for female authorization , or growing up , orbelieving in yourself . Elsa and Anna both stay emotionally complex and flawedcharacters , who comport foolishly and selfishly at time , but their adherence assisters is always at the heart of the moving-picture show . The film lets us see how Elsa ’s confinementhas damaged both sis , without ever offer us a chapiter - M Metaphor .
A lot of vivify kids ’ films fall into the trap of usingridiculous plot of land contrivances just to shore up a simplistic message — but Frozen has the bravery to be a bit moremessy , so that by the meter you get to an end that does fetch everythingtogether , it feels less like a final plot hammer descending and more like a realresolution .

Like Wreck - It Ralph , Frozen’sSnow Queen becomes a villain because that ’s what middling much everybody expectsof her . She ’s separated and has a world power that only seems to be capable of ruiningeverything . Unlike Ralph , though , she ca n’t even imagine a rendering of the worldwhere she ’s the hero sandwich instead of the villain — she ’s just trapped in her roleas exile giant , and can either embrace it or accept it .
The fact that Frozenturns a cock-and-bull story villainness into a sympathetic and complicated character — who gets the best songs — results in an escapist toon that ’s feminist in asubtler means than your standard “ girl ability ” story . And the mode this movie pose the relationshipbetween two baby front and center , while still offering up a strong malecharacters in Hans ( Santino Fontana ) and Kristoff ( Jonathan Groff ) , is alsovery nicely done .
At the same time , Frozenis nowhere near as safe as Wreck - ItRalph — which is to say , it falls short of perfection . The world - buildingis a little scattershot , as compared to Ralph’srichly imagined TV - game multiverse . Some of the story beats are a littlemurky , and some of the twists seem to come out of nowhere . Some of the setpieces overstay their welcome . Frozendoesn’t have quite as much sheer cleverness or inventiveness , minute by minute , as Ralph daze us with .

But the core of Frozenis really strong , and the major characters feel fully realized . This movie hasthe same genius for juxtaposing the archetypes that are placed on people withthe mussy world of being a individual in the world . And there are some real , firm , moment in the film that will grab you by the nerve .
wintry isaggressively musical — it ’s not just one of those animated films where a fewkey moments have character reference peach . Pretty much any time anybody wants to sayanything in Frozen , there ’s a musicalnumber . melodious number end , only to segue into other musical numbers . The goodnews is , the song are the work of AvenueQ / Book of Mormon co - creatorRobert Lopez and his married woman Kristen Anderson - Lopez , and they are as catchy as hell . And they massively amp up the aroused strength of the report , when they’renot total a piece more comedy to the procedings .
And that ’s the other thing — this film is goofy as heck . It’snot over - the - top silly , so much as just gently wacky . From Olaf the dim - wittedsnowman ( readour audience with actor Josh Gad here ) to the kooky Duke of Weselton ( AlanTudyk , fully bringing it ) Frozen is justa little bite addled , in a mostly in effect direction . And there is some unfeignedly bodacious slapstick in this film , much of it having to do with ice - related mishaps .

The other affair that ’s worth mention about Frozen : it ’s beautifully animated . For afilm in which ice and snow drive a lot of the write up , Frozen give a lot of attention to getting their texture andconsistency just right . There are countless scenes where the fineness ofsnow or the trickery of ice is conveyed not just by how they affect thecharacters who interact with them , but also how light run across them . Asmall USA of computer professional probably spend months cooped up somewheretrying to get those textures right , and they did commodity .
All in all , it ’s tempting to say Frozen does for fairytales what Ralphdid for video games — but it ’s more like both moving picture take our currentobsession with heroes and villains and open it up a little bit , by present howthose roles are just purpose .

And with fairytales holding so much sway over our collectiveimagination just now , it ’s great to see films like this Frozen ( and Brave ) that replacethe common opaque wickedness with something more personal , that opens a magicwindow onto the real experience of grow up and finding yourself as a somebody .
