Festival Grogu Was an Icon at Coachella 2022

Coachella 2022 was my first - ever music festival and in the calendar week leading up to it , I keep ask myself : will it be the music version of Comic - Con ? This year ’s batting order admit turn like composerDanny Elfmanwith a lively orchestra and rock ring , Marvel Studios ’ Eros aka superstar Harry Styles , attachment theme birdsong Oscar victor Billie Eilish , and launch the Jewels ( featured inRick and Mortyand Cyberpunk 2077 ) .

Turns out there was more dad culture at the festival , which I take care with pressure credentials , than I anticipated .

Within the little villages among the stages , there were awful collective like the DoLab , which had a featured stage for bouncy DJ hardening . It ’s one of the first places I found myself wander to beat the passion , and because of their presence in the immersive art and music scene . If there was going to be somewhere I ’d stumble on some sci - fi and fancy content , it ’d be here . And sure enough when I got there I was greet by two giant eyes in a post - apocalyptic oasis .

seek elbow room that film could gather music , I landed on their cassette deck installation which featured a mixtape station to make a pull for their disc jockey to intermingle into their music rotation . The first cassette I found was for a single on The Mask soundtrack — oddly enough , I had already marvel if Jim Carrey was going to show up for the Weeknd ’s final nighttime set as he ’s featured heavily on Dawn FM . So while that did n’t come in to pass , I made certain to put his vocalism out there in the desert by ways of his cover of Cuban Pete . ( Yes , I started off chaotically . ) . And of course , I pulled the Batman soundtrack from Prince for some “ Partyman ” to congratulate the wave-particle duality of that movie ’s medicine since Elfman was the other side of that coin . Rounded it out with some Nirvana to nod atThe Batman , a bit of Weird Al , and some Au R&B from that epoch .

On the 2d day I meet up with a friend , who take in us down to the Record Safari for Coachella ’s very own Record Store Day . There I managed to regain a belittled but mighty pick in the soundtracks section including vinyls for pixie , The Fly , and Peter Pan . And at one level we managed to take the air through a DJ set blasting Elton John ’s “ Circle of Life”—Hans Zimmerplayed a solidifying a few year back — proving that soundtrack fandom is at least a growing niche force at the democratic music fest .

Outside of Danny Elfman ( more on our experience at his set later ) , it became a bit of a game to bound around stage to see if I could recognize euphony from the movies in the set lean of other artists . Sure enough , we take in Niki performing “ Every Summertime ” from Marvel Studios ’ Shang Chi and the Ten Rings which was ethereally perform at golden 60 minutes . Later on we start an extra liveliness hike to make it through the nighttime by learn hightail it the Jewels . And throughout the run of the two - weekend fest , there were special soda pop up performances inspired by flick moments . Eilish ’s brother and manufacturer Finneas performed “ Nobody Like You , ” which he co - write , from Turning Red — and during the 88 rise set on weekend one Utada Hikaru performed theirKingdom Heartssongs . ( devastatingly they did n’t return for weekend two ) .

The three-fold threat of the headliners really brought the theatricality to fold out each dark . So while not specifically cinema , they all brought their own form of spectacle that I can not wait to see more of in film . Specifically , Harry Styles , whose chamaeleon - like charm transude thoroughgoing ambrosia the crowd ate up . Yeah , I now getwhy he was cast as Eros , Marvel ’s God of Love , and I go for we see him in Thor : Love and Thunder . severally , Eilish is someone who we have only just begun to see their power in medicine produce for film , having writing recognition on Daniel Craig ’s final chemical bond picture show with the aptly entitle title track for No prison term to Die and on “ Somebody Like You ” from Pixar ’s Turning Red . get ta say I was definitely waste one’s time that her set did n’t include her Bond theme . She and her buddy Finneas are a couple who I ca n’t wait to see strive the heights of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross .

Overall , if you ’re a mark and soundtracks devotee , you will rule your recession at Coachella . And as more crossover begins to happen through music and immersive elements in pop culture , it ’ll only grow . I fully found myself surprised at how much I was able to still identify with , at a stead that seemed like I would n’t find my scene . Coachella really shares a lot with the same enthusiasm people have for stand all day to get into Hall H at San Diego Comic - Con ( Eilish fans held their spots at the primary stage all Clarence Shepard Day Jr. in the same way Marvel and DC fans agree row for 60 minutes before their panels ) , folks dress up at intricately ascosplayersdo day by day with intense commitment against the elements like dust storm , and you have to prepare to be on foot for many twenty-four hour period . The exhaustion is tangible , and it ’s just the same . 10/10 would do it again .
