Ant - Man director Edgar Wright broke his silence on his split with Marvel — although very briefly . He posted this word-painting with the message “ selfie ” , and almost immediately deleted it . Of course , the internet is evermore , and the pic was caught — and it ’s a subtle but definite rebuke to Marvel .
For those of you who do n’t accredit him , this picture is of silent film comedian Buster Keaton , hold Wright ’s iconic Cornetto ice cream retinal cone . The relevance is almost sure enough this : Keaton was promontory of his own independent production troupe in the 1920s , and made some of the most acclaimed comedy movie of all time as author , director and actor . He excellently sign up away his independency to MGM in 1928 , which took ascendency of his hand , would n’t let him do his own stunts , and more . The deal not only dissemble the quality of Keaton ’s film , but his felicity as well — he famously called his determination the bad error he ’d ever made .
Now it ’s potential that Wright was merely using a ikon of the excellently stone - faced Keaton to show his sadness that things did n’t work between him and Marvel . But if that were the case , why would Wright decide to delete it ? Especially so promptly ? I think it ’s pretty clear that Wright sees himself as Keaton in this scenario , and Marvel is the vicious studio who want to homogenize him and his work . Wright stimulate out , but he ’s clearly pee off at Marvel — wee-wee enough to post this pic , even if it was just for a moment .
