There ’s a terrible hereditary eye disease call Leber ’s hereditary optic neuropathy that affect men in their twenty . It ’s a mitochondrial disease inherited from your female parent that leads to total sightlessness within six calendar month of onset .

A late breakthrough from a squad of research worker at Newcastle University suggests this disease may be two-sided in its early stages . The researchers gave 55 test field of study the drug idebenone for six months and 20 reported an improvement in their visual sensation at the final stage of the study .

It did n’t work for everyone and it ’s not a cure , but as team leader Patrick Chinnery level out the results show the drug had “ a significant effect . ” Best of all , idebenone has limited side effect and could be used prophylactically to prevent the onrush of the disease .
