During the 2024 BAFTA Awards red carpet Sunday, BBC’s entertainment correspondent Colin Paterson asked Scott, 47, for his “reaction” toseeing Barry Keoghan’s “naked dance scene"inSaltburn.
Scott, who is not inSaltburn, is a gay actor who is the lead inAll of Us Strangers, a LGBTQ drama thatearned six BAFTA nominations.
When thequestion was posed to him, Scott laughed and said, “I don’t wanna spoil it for anybody.” Reporter Paterson said “spoil away” but the actor still denied, appearing uncomfortable. Paterson then said, “There was a lot of talk about prosthetics. How well do you know him? Too much? Is it too much?” as Scott walked away.
On Friday, BBC said in astatementthat it “received complaints from people who felt” the question “was inappropriate and homophobic.”
The outlet clarified that Paterson asked aboutAll of Us Strangersbefore “he then moved on to ask about the popularity of Irish actors, where Barry Keoghan, star ofSaltburn, was mentioned.”

“Saltburnis a film which has had cultural impact, with Barry Keoghan’s scene at the end gaining a lot of attention in particular —something the actor has addressed himself,” BBC added in the statement.
“Our question to Andrew Scott was meant to be a light-hearted reflection of the discussion around the scene and was not intended to cause offense,” the outlet said, adding that others were asked about the scene on the red carpet that night.
BBC concluded, “We do, however, accept that the specific question asked to Andrew Scott was misjudged. After speaking with Andrew on the carpet, our reporter acknowledged on air that his questioning may have gone too far and that he was sorry if this was the case.”

Scotttold the U.K.‘sAttitudemagazineearlier this year: “I just enjoy being gay so much on so many levels, I think it’s such a wonderful thing to me.”
“It’s an extraordinary gift to my life and just to be able to see the real beauty in being gay is completely wonderful. The older I get,” he said, “just the more I feel so lucky to have been born gay and that pervades my life in the sense of all my friendships. I have so many amazing queer friends in my life now that I just adore.”
