Local prosecutor in California recently lodge a lawsuit against Kroger ( which also owns the Ralphs and Food 4 Less supermarket chains ) for allegedly mislabeling the calorie count on store - name sugar . The Kroger Carbmaster bread phone line list just 30 calories per slice , when the loot was in reality 50 calories or more per slice , according to prosecutors . Ventura County and Santa Barbara County District Attorney ’s Offices allege that the advertised small calorie counts on Carbmaster from about 2018 to 2022 included an undercount of the actual calorie . The L.A. Times talked with an expert at Dartmouth College ’s School of Medicine , Susan B. Roberts , who has researched nutritionist’s calorie count labeling for years .

And it ’s not just packaged food . A study from 2020 find that kilocalorie counts at flying food restaurants were often faulty .
