Studios rolling out 3D stufffor 2009 like James Cameron ’s Avatar , and the animated Monsters vs. Aliens are hoping Beowulf will be the exam case that prove 3-D is back . But it ’s really just a distressing , last - ditch movement to pull people out of 3D video game worlds by using the 3D word , and it wo n’t work .
You ca n’t take a 1950s - earned run average technology like 3D and hope it will compete with World of Warcraft . Sure , 3D really was the awesome when you could see that scary branch reaching out of the cover in wight from the Black Lagoon in the mid-50s . Today , however , audiences are used to 3D that they can interact with . They ’re not going to amount out to the theatre in swarm just for a machine they can download for free with SecondLife .
Do n’t get me wrong — I think audiences will absolutely change by reversal out for Avatar , and perchance even for Beowulf . ( I ’ll be there tonight , with my 3D methamphetamine hydrochloride on over my other glasses . ) But that wo n’t be for the 3D — it will be for the story , and in the case of Avatar because they entrust the James “ Titanic ” Cameron steel . If anything , though , the three-D crap will add up across as cheese that ’s stress too severely and will make people less prepared to love these movies on its own footing .
Yeah , theater - release is dying out . People are n’t bribe movie tickets because they can stay home and look out Netflix or play Xbox . And the studios think that if they can just make theater of operations - departure special again , maybe with 3D , people will return to the old way and go out to the movies on Friday nights like they used to back when 3D was cool . They wo n’t . It does n’t mean we do n’t love pic , and it does n’t mean we wo n’t still get delirious about going out to see them opening Nox with a self-aggrandizing crew . It just think we love doing other things too . And all the 3D in the world wo n’t exchange that .
